Course Overview
What do they do - Fashion designers create the elegant, whimsical and fun clothes and accessories we see parading down runways. Fashion designers yield tremendous influence on what we wear and how we wear it. Many of us have clothes in our closets stamped with their names. We may own sunglasses, purses, or scarves splattered with these logos. And even those of us who couldn't care less about fashion probably can admit to owning at least one branded item. There are designers at every level, designing not only fancy evening dresses but lowly foundation garments and work boots.
Specializations - Men's or women's wear, children's apparel, swimwear, lingerie, etc.
Getting Ahead - Usually beginning as an assistant designer, pattern maker, sketcher can advance someone to a designer or head designer position. Or there is the choice creating your own label. Fashion designers must be business savvy as well as creative. Over time, they may work their way up from gofers to design assistants and finally to head designer at a particular fashion house. Success depends on not only imagination, artistic creativity, and hard work, but also on business acumen.

This programme is structured as a 2 years Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design. Upon successful completion of the Advanced Diploma students may elect to undertake a progression programme leading to a Bachelor of Design from Raffles College Pty Ltd, trading as Raffles College of Design and Commerce. You will learn drawing, color composition, form, pattern making, draping and cutting techniques, etc, to build a firm foundation in fashion design. Our main advantage is that we work very closely with the fashion industry to offer our students real-life projects for them to gain experience. The annual graduates' fashion show where graduating students display their collections is important as a lot of fashion industry people attend the show to scout new talents.
Career Development
The entrepreneurs in fashion industry have come to realize that only with the help of famous designers can they establish top brands and only under famous brands can the fashion industry gain long-term and continuous development. It is known that fashion design has always been the weakest point in China's fashion industry. The design level in China's fashion industry falls far behind international standard. Many companies are depending mainly on copying and imitation and do not have their own styles, which hinders China's fashion design from stepping up to a higher level. For designers, companies need not only a lot of line designers but also high-level design executives and chief designers who can integrate their own independent thinking and unique concepts into the companies' design ideology.
